Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell just keeps picking up star power with the addition of Adriana Barraza to the cast. You might remember this beauty from Babel, but now she’s joining a steadily sprawling cast in the return of Sam Raimi to the horror genre.
Now that alone is good news–the plot is somewhat of a cliche, an unwitting recepient of a supernatural curse and what they need to do to get rid of it and such–but if there’s anyone out there who can take a sow’s ear of a cliche plot and turn it into the silk purse of an outrageous laugh-riot splatterfest, it’s Sam Raimi. Sam Raimi gets automatic geek cred just for Evil Dead, let alone its two sequels, not to mention for giving us the spectacular career that was Bruce Campbell.
Of course, nothing’s been the same since Campbell’s career has crapped out to voice acting and hawking Old Spice, a sentiment even the august voice of Film Threat joins me in expressing. But still–2009 looks like it might be a banner year with Sam Raimi!
